How Amazon Fires Challenge Climate Pledges

The PanAmazon, one of the world’s largest carbon reservoirs and a key biodiversity hotspot, is increasingly under threat from escalating fire regimes. In the emerging “Pyrocene” era, fires are no longer occasional disturbances, they are becoming structural drivers of forest degradation, biodiversity loss, and carbon emissions. This panel will explore how Amazonian fires, fueled by deforestation, land-use change, and climate extremes, are undermining the very climate pledges nations have committed to under the Paris Agreement and the solutions that are emerging from the forest such as Bioeconomy, REDD+, Payment for Environmental Services and restoration. The session will also address policy gaps, explore integrated fire management strategies, and discuss pathways to align fire governance with climate goals, ensuring that commitments translate into effective action.
