We Stand with the Trees: Amazon Women Leading Reforestation and Forest Protection
Forests are critical to mitigating the climate crisis, yet continue to be gravely threatened. During this event, frontline and Indigenous women leaders, alongside representatives from international environmental organizations, will address the root causes of the climate crisis and deforestation. Focusing on the Amazon Rainforest, speakers will showcase successful women-led solutions, approaches, and strategies for reforesting and protecting territories through Traditional Ecological Knowledge and forest trainings. Case studies, methodologies, and stories will be shared. Solutions presented will highlight the necessity for rights-based community and women-led reforestation and forest protection initiatives, and denounce false solutions and the commodification of nature. Speakers will also discuss the necessity of implementing policies that ensure protections for women land defenders on the frontlines of long-term forest protection, which includes the Escazú Agreement. Women’s leadership is essential for protecting forests and the climate to ensure a healthy and just future for all.
